Aside from being an actress, writer, poet, pioneering feminist and an inventor who held several patents, Lizzie Magie is best known for creating what has become the most popular board game in the world: Monopoly. Born in a progressive Illinois family, Maggie created The Landlord’s Game and when she was in her 30s when she applied for and was granted a patent for it. Magie designed her Landlord’s Game to demonstrate the evils of land grabs and monopolies along with their consequences. Her idea was stolen by Charles Darrow and further sold to the Parker Brothers. Magie’s identity as Monopoly’s inventor was uncovered by accident by Ralph Anspach.
